Agreement In Old Testament

It didn`t take long for Israel to fall back into the wrong ways of the world. God reminded the Israelites about nine months later in Leviticus 26:1-3 of the terms of the agreement. They were already losing sight of what God had promised them if they obeyed (vs. 4-13). But he also explained what would happen if they refused to obey (vs. 14-39). And that`s exactly what Israel did. The God who has become a word says, “Turn around, O children who fall back,” said the Lord. Because I`m married to you… (Jer 3,14). For more than 700 years, God implored Israel to turn away from its evil ways. But it didn`t work. Many people do not understand the true meaning of the Old and New Covenants, because they do not really know what a covenant is. Webster`s defines it as “an agreement, normally formally, between two or more people to do or not to do something in particular.” Quite simply, an alliance is an agreement between two or more parties.

By observing different types of agreements between humans, we find that they can exist either between individuals or between larger entities like tribes and nations. However, in the vast majority of cases, they fall between the most important units. In some cases, even if an individual acts, he is in a representative property, as the head of a clan or as a king. If the covenant is concluded between tribes, then it is a contract or an alliance. In the following passages, the covenant is used: Ge 14:13; 21:27,32; 26:28; 31:44; Ex 23:32; 34:12,15; From 7:2; Jos 9:6-7,11,15-16; Jog 2:2; 1Sa 11:1; 3:12; 15:19 parallel 2Ch 16:3; 20:34; Ps 83:5; Isa 33:8; Hes 16:61; 17:13-19; 30:5; Da 11:22; 1:9 In other cases, it is between a king and his subjects, if it is rather a holy order or action, such as 2Sa 3:12-13,11; 5:3 parallel 1Ch 11:3; Jer 34:8–18; Since 9:27 In other cases it is between individuals or between small groups, where it is an agreement or a promise (2Ki 11:4 parallel 2Ch 23:1; Job 31:1; 41:4; Ho 10:4). Between David and Jonathan, it is more precisely a covenant of friendship (1Sa 18:3; 20:8; 23:18), as apparently in Ps 55:20. This means a covenant of marriage in 2:14, but probably not in pr 2:17, where it is better to understand the meaning as “their covenant with God.” We have already seen that the Old Covenant was a marriage contract between the old nation of Israel and God. What is the concordance between God`s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God; As God said, “I will make my abode among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people. Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, so that you can devote yourself to prayer; But then will get back together, so that Satan cannot tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
